What
It Does :
Surgical enhancement or increase in size of breasts. The procedure
is through insertion of silicone or saline breast implants either
above or below the muscle.
Best Candidates :
Women with small breasts from developmental reasons, pregnancy,
breast feeding or weight loss. Age group may vary from twenties to
any older age group.
Types of Anesthesia :
Local Anesthesia, Twilight Anesthesia (I V Sedation) or General
Anesthesia.
Length of Surgery :
1-2 hours.
Length of Hospital Stay :
Outpatient or 1 day.
Length of Stay In The Country :
5-10 days.
Swelling :
Several weeks. Initially breasts will feel very high but as the
swelling goes down so will the implants settle down.
Bruising :
3 weeks or longer
Dressings :
The initial dressing and wrapping will be removed in 5 to 7 days.
If drainage tubes are put in these will also be removed at this
time. Subsequently support bra would be required. Bras will have to
be worn without underwires for several weeks.
Stitches :
If non absorbable stitches are used these will need to be removed
in 7-10 days.
Back To Work :
Return to desk work in 1 week. Physically demanding work within 4-6
weeks.
Activity and Exercise :
Do not lift your arms above the level of armpits. No aerobic
exercises 3-4 weeks. No weight lifting for 6 weeks. No sexual
activity 2 weeks. No vigorous handling of breasts for 6 weeks
although massage as recommended by the surgeon may be started
sooner.
Final Result :
May take several months as the swelling goes down and the implants
settle down to achieve their final position and shape.
Sun Protection :
Important and should be used if you plan to be on the beach. Dark
swim suits and covering of the incisions may suffice.
